When thinking about custom children’s bedrooms, it is wise to consider a design that has room to grow with your child. In light of this, today’s custom children’s beds need to be more than beds alone. They need to be multi-purpose pieces of furniture, combined, of course, with fanciful works of art, designed with a growing child’s needs foremost in mind. And that’s precisely how we’ve designed our custom children’s bed, as multi-functional pieces of children’s furniture that fulfill a parent’s needs and a child’s desires.

No longer does a parent ever have to settle for a custom children’s bed that’s just a bed again. Not when you can find double-function and triple-function custom children’s furniture that serves as a playroom and a storage unit as well as a bed, all in one.

The benefits to such a multi-purpose unit are equally multi-fold. First there’s the cost-savings. Some may imagine custom children’s furniture to be expensive, but the truth is far different. The truth is the cost of purchasing separate pieces of children’s furniture for each of the primary functional needs for a children’s bedroom - sleep, play, storage - would likely be far higher.

Another benefit of multi-functional custom children’s furniture is economy of space. Having to design a separate sleeping space, play space, storage units, and eventually study space, will require a large children’s bedroom in which to arrange it all, or else make a small bedroom feel crowded and cramped.

Multi-functional custom children’s beds solve that problem by having all of those spaces built-in to their sleek and compact design. The tremendous savings in floor space is enough of a value alone to make the cost of custom children’s furniture pay for itself.

Examples of how such multi-functionality can be built-in to custom children’s furniture is by having the staircase leading to the upper level of a bunk bed or loft double as a set of dresser drawers, each step another drawer. The way down from the loft or bunk bed, however, need not be the same set of stairs/drawers, but a slide on the opposite end of the unit, adding the element of play into that component of the design.

The trunk of a treehouse, the pillars at the entrance to a cottage, mansion, or dollhouse, or the towers of a castle can be turned into display shelves for your child’s most treasured toys and then, as your child grows, transformed into bookshelves to help them with their studies.

Another way play space can be built into the design of custom children’s beds is to build it onto the design. That is to say, build a sturdy enough structure that can be climbed on (for we all know children love to climb) and create a way to encourage safe climbing. This can be easily accomplished by transforming a support structure, like a cottage or castle wall or the trunk of a treehouse, into a climbing wall with no-slip steps and hand grips.

Of course the most obvious and versatile way to design place space into custom children’s furniture is to build an entire, open play space into the design, into which parents can place all sorts of toys and games, and children can enjoy all sorts of activities. This is simple to do in a two-level structure that isn’t a bunk bed (in other words: where both levels aren’t being used for sleeping).

In a castle, cottage, mansion, or dollhouse themed custom children’s bedroom, for example, the interior chamber can be kept open as a play space, as can the castle turrets or the cottage, mansion, or dollhouse rooftops. In a treehouse bed, storage can be built into the trunk and a play space can be built into the treetops.

A completely different way to transform custom children’s beds into multi-functional pieces of furniture is to order convertible units. With convertible children’s furniture, elements can be moved and altered to serve different functions. For example, a bunk bed can be designed to reassemble as a single bed with seating units, perfect if your children have friends over to watch a movie, play a video game, or have a tea party.

Or build a trundle bed into your custom children’s bed with a sleeping unit that rolls out. This is perfect for sleepovers and can be tucked away when not in use to make ample extra play space. Plus, you could remove the mattress and use the space for extra storage.

Custom children’s beds can even solve the question of lighting in your child’s bedroom. Rather than installing expensive ceiling fixtures or finding space for bulky lamps, abundant lighting can be built into your child’s custom bed. Plus, the design of most custom children’s furniture is open and airy, with lots of windows and portholes and such, allowing for plenty of light as well as a healthy circulation of air.

Buying your child a custom children’s bed is one thing. But giving your child a multi-purpose custom children’s furniture unit that incorporates sleeping, playing, studying, and storing into its design is a gift for both your child and you.

Moving into a new house can sometimes cause a quandry. You can stand and stare at large… blank spaces for weeks wondering just what to do with them. These blank spaces are the walls of your new house or apartment.

Most people have a hard time figuring out what to do with their walls, because their thoughts are limited to just paint and pictures. There’s actually quite a bit more you can do to decorate your walls though, and here are a few of my favorite tips:

1. Create shadow boxes. These are especially nice to do as remembrances of loved ones who are no longer with us. If you want to create a shadow box for grandparents for instance, but you don’t have anything handed down from them that could easily be used in this decoration, try visiting around to yard sales and flea markets. Find items that fit the timeframe of your grandparent’s lives, or that remind you of them fondly. Use these items in your shadow boxes, then display them in a nice area of your home to symbolize both the love you had for them, and the legacy they left behind.

2. If you love blankets or quilts, there are some very unique ways to decorate your walls with these. Simply attach pieces of wood to your wall, drill holes in them, and put dowel rods in the holes. On these rods you can hang your quilts or blankets just like you can on a regular quilt rack, except this way they decorate your walls. Placing the items just above a sofa is a great way to keep blankets nearby when you watch movies or snuggle up next to the fire. Also, if you enjoy quilting or sewing, you may want to use a similar structure on the wall to hold bolts of fabric for your creations. The walls look lovely, and you’re also organizing your home!

3. Here are just a few other ideas: You can use old windows and some curtains to make a faux window in a room without enough windows. Your can use old picture frames to “frame” an oil painting or collage or quotations. Using small vases, you can have fresh flowers hanging on your wall. You could also make part of your wall into corkboard or a set of box frames so that you can display your children’s artwork.

So there you have multiple, easy, and inexpensive ways to uniquely decorate your walls!

Of course there are the traditional methods that can be used such as soothing music, stories and mobiles but if you are struggling with these then a thought is the introduction of the a wall fountain.

Wall fountains come in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs and can easily be placed on the wall in the Child’s bedroom well out of reach of little hands. It is a well known fact that the noise of flowing water is very soothing and this applies to children as well as adults. The sound of flowing water can help to assist the children to sleep more easily plus there are additional benefits of having a natural humidifier in the room which will assist in the removal of dust particles from the air. A low level noise source such as the wall fountains that comes from within the children’s bedroom will also help in blocking any unwanted noise from outside the room such as downstairs rooms or other older children’s bedrooms. This will then in turn promote the relaxed environment of the room and allow the child to rest more easily.

If your conception is that all Wall Fountains are made in designs that would not be suitable for a Child’s bedroom then you would be wrong. There are now lots of different and modern designs that are more than suitable to be placed within the bedroom and will complement existing decorations. The wall fountains are very safe as they can be placed well out of the reach of the children and the pumps do not provide any additional noise levels whilst the unit will connect into the mains as any standard lamp or electrical item would. The water that flows over the fountain is contained within the item and only needs topping up occasionally when the natural evaporation occurs and there is no chance of any water coming out of the fountain on to any other objects.

There are other additional benefits that the wall fountains can provide within a Child’s bedroom and one is that they normally have a low level light built in, this can be used as a night light. Often with small children they like to have a small amount of light within the room when they are going to sleep and the wall fountains can double up as that night light rather than having the need to buy a separate one. As it can be seen wall fountains can play a big part in helping to create a perfect ambient setting for your children’s bedroom whilst also playing a functional role in helping to keep a room fresh and clean.

Decorating & Coordinating Your Child’s Bedroom

You’ve chosen your color scheme or theme for your child’s bedroom, but you haven’t the slightest idea of where to start! Our room decor tips will help you put together a stunning masterpiece of a bedroom that will be wonderfully coordinated.

Most color schemes, and even themes, involve one to three colors, although they can certainly include touches of other colors. The easiest place to start is with an object or accessory that ties your color scheme together. This could be a lamp, a painting, or even bedding. It’s important that something in the room involve all or most of the colors you want to incorporate.

You can certainly paint your walls, choose your carpet, and hang your curtains first, but it may be more difficult in the long run. Of course, if these are already finished, we would be happy to customize as closely as possible to what you already have.

For our example, we’ll use a Parisian chic color scheme, usually pink, white, and black. For our unifying piece, we would use our Pink Poodle Children’s Wall Art, which has a tasteful blend of black, white, and several shades of pink polka dots. Since we would most likely use a lighter wall color, we would frame the wall art in deep brown or black to draw the eye in to the design.

Once you have your unifying piece, you then begin tying the rest of the room together. If your carpet has not already been chosen or installed, you can compare carpet samples to the unifying piece for color match. If your carpet already has been installed and doesn’t quite fit, consider a rug that fits with your scheme. Decorative rugs are also wonderful choices for tiled or hardwood floors.

Going with our Parisian chic example, we could choose a neutral carpet, then a black and pink decorative rug for accent. White carpet is an appropriate choice for older children that will not ruin it. Lighter colored carpets, such as a pale pink, will lend to making the room look larger, brighter, and airy.

Your next step is to choose the paint for your walls. Paint swatches are free at your local hardware or paint store. Bring home some samples and compare to your unifying piece and carpet to see what coordinates the best.

First, hold the paint swatch up to middle of the the wall and imagine what it will look like painted.

Then, hold the paint swatch up to the very bottom of the wall where it meets the floor and compare. If your carpet has not been installed yet, but has been chosen, hold it up to the actual carpet. (You can also choose the carpet after you have chosen your wall colors.)

A popular trend is to use more than one color for your walls in tasteful expressions of interior decorating. But if you are using only one color, avoid using dark colors that might shrink the look of the room. Examples of what we might do for Parisian chic:

Paint the walls white, with a black stripe horizontally across chair rail level. Paint the wall below the black stripe in pink vertical stripes or dots.

Paint the walls a pale pink that coordinates with the shades in the painting. We would not use the same shade as the carpet, but a shade or two lighter. We could also go a shade darker, but this may lend to too dark of a look. If we chose white carpet with accent rugs, we would most likely go with a pale pink, or the above option.

Choosing curtains can be done at any step in this process, as long as it coordinates with everything else. Parisian chic curtains could be pure black, when there is not a lot of other black used in the room. They could also be a white material with pink polka dots, to coordinate with our Pink Poodle painting. The possibilities for curtains are endless, probably the least difficult part of the decorating process.

Once your walls, carpet, and curtains are in place, the last and most fun step is to accessorize! Lamps, pillow shams, and other bedding will really make your decor beautiful and unified. Switch covers, doorknobs, drawer pulls, wall letters, bulletin boards, tassels (as drapery tie backs or ceiling fan strings), and picture frames are all items that can be hand painted to match your decor. Tying together a bedroom with these types of accessories will delight your child.

After all, it’s the little things that will make or break a room, setting it apart for a truly unique look. We would be delighted to help you put together the perfect room decor. The center of every pirate’s life is his ship, and so should the central focal point of every pirate theme bedroom be a custom pirate ship bed. With his own private Jolly Roger to command, your little captain can conquer the seven seas that is his fantasy pirate theme bedroom.

You can have a custom pirate ship bed built with both a lower and an upper deck. Below deck he can bunk down securely for nights of smooth sailing slumber, while above deck he can live out all his make-believe tales of swashbuckling adventure. You can have portholes built in as his windows to the world, letting light into his private quarters where he counts his treasure, charts his course, and plots his next move.

Another creative plan for a custom pirate ship bed is a ladder (or even a rope ladder) instead of stairs to climb up from down below with a slide for the trip back down, emulating the classic plank he can have his enemies, captives, and mutinous crew “walk”.

Make the custom pirate theme bed a canopy bed and you’ve just added a giant fluttering sail for him to hoist and maneuver as it catches the wind and sends him along on his journeys. A crow’s nest and a skull-and-crossbones flag are other details that help round out the image.

The key color for a custom pirate theme bedroom is obviously blue. For both the great wide open sea surrounding him and the massive sky above, different shades of blue will add depth and precision to his fantasy of living out in the middle of his own private corner of the ocean. Blue floor mats, wall-to-wall carpets, or area rugs make excellent floor coverings while blue paint is a simple and affordable choice for the walls and ceiling.

Accents for the perfect pirate theme bedroom wall mural include clouds, seagulls, sea swells, and bolts of lightning, along with the sun, moon, and stars, and maybe a distant island in the distance for him to steer his vessel towards while declaring, “Land ho!” And a perfect piece of wall art to hang is a framed treasure map.

A perfect toy box for a pirate theme bedroom (and one that can easily be built directly into the custom pirate ship bed) would be a treasure chest. Making it weather-beaten by the salty sea and covered in seaweed are details are ways to add even more vividness to the image. A wooden steering wheel and a giant compass both make ideal wall clocks for a budding young pirate.

How the inside of your home looks is just as important as how the outside looks. Sure you could argue that everyone sees the outside while only you, your family, and your guests see the inside. Since you are the only ones who see the inside, it should reflect your personality and be a pleasure for everyone. That’s where having the right interior design painting ideas comes in handy. Each person has their own individual sense of style and a way they envision their home. Paint is an inexpensive way to add personality and unique looks to any wall or room in your home.

It can be difficult to choose the exact way you want your interior walls to appear. With all of the do it yourselfers out there today, there are plenty of interior design painting ideas that have been modified to be easy for the average person to create. One of the most popular techniques is sponge painting. By painting the desired walls a darker color than the accent color you are quickly and easily able to create a marbled effect on the wall. Latex paints work best for this job. You may want to experiment with different sized and shaped sponges on a disposable surface, like old wood, to find the effect you like the most.

Interior Design Painting Ideas

Another of the interior design painting ideas that is very popular right now is faux painting. The French and Italian old homes are full of examples of faux painting. It consists of creating a work of art directly on the wall. You may choose a window, classic landscape scene, or anything that appeals to you and the room you are changing. Unless you are very gifted with paint and brushes, it might be worth your time and money to hire a professional or art student to do this for you.

One version of faux painting you won’t have any trouble taking care of yourself is stencil painting. This technique is especially good for bathrooms and kitchens, where extreme conditions often interfere with wallpaper and for personalizing the babys’ and childrens’ rooms. Paint is easy to cover up when the little ones get older and want something different.

There are plenty of other interior design painting ideas to choose from if those don’t appeal to you. Your local paint or home improvement store staff should be able to help you out.

You can find countless number of things that can be applied to your children room decor. People take it as a challenge to decorate their children’s bedroom. When choosing your decoration, you need to keep certain things in mind. Your child should feel safe and comfortable in his room; it’s the place where he will learn and groom. This is the place where your child will perform different activities like studying, playing, sleeping and eating. It’s the place where he will learn and grow up. So, the elements of the room should be comfortable, acceptable and cozy for them. Selecting the right decoration and beddings for your child’s room can be difficult. Choose paintings that you know they will enjoy now and for many years to come. Always keep in mind what your child needs and likes when you are selecting items for their bedroom.

Sometimes decorating the wall for your children bedroom can be challenging, with so many items to choose from including paint, wallpaper and paintings. You just can’t paint it with white color and leave it. Bright and dark colors are much loved additions to this kind of decoration, so what you may need to do is find yourself some bright colors like dark green, brown or chocolate or other colors that your child loves in addition to the right paintings to make the room really pop. You can also ask your child’s suggestion; this can help you select the right color for their bedroom. In the end it will be your child who will live in the room. You can also try wallpaper if you like; there are different varieties of wallpapers available in the market. You can find your self-wallpapers with different pictures made on them. Usually children like wallpapers with pictures of animals or cartoons made on them. You should select wallpaper that will match the bedding of your child’s room. You can also go for borders instead of buying wallpapers. This can be less expensive when changing the children’s room décor later on.

Rugs are another option for you to consider. If you have a hard floor in your child’s bedroom then rugs are the best option for you. When selecting rugs try to get soft and puffy ones. The most important thing here is to select the right match; this will provide you with a good combination. Always use rug pad if there is a hard floor, this will give you more grip and will decrease the chances of getting slip. You can find rugs in different varieties and in different price ranges. You can also ask you child for some suggestion on it.

Decorating children bedroom can be real fun. Try different and new ideas for your children’s room decor. Use different items and lighting to change the atmosphere of the room. Lighting bulbs of different colors can be a good option or you can try using different stuff toys or dolls for decorating the room. You can also look for different accessories that can help you change the look of your child’s room. You can easily find these accessories in the market. You can even buy a fancy lamp and place it in you child’s room. Decorating children room can be quite a fun for people and especially if your son or daughter is shopping with you.

Choosing the right interior paint colors to paint a room may look difficult with all the color theories and details. But for most of us, our eyes will be able to tell when two colors can work together or just will not blend. Together with a simple color wheel and a few time tested color blending methods, you should be able to choose the right paint and your interior painting work should yield some positive and colorful results.

The color wheel is a simple visual tool to help you assess the properties of each color and how each shade can best blend with a different color. Just go to the internet and search for ‘color wheel’ for an idea of this tool. It is a good guide to help you pick the best partner for different colors. On the color wheel are the various main color group, red, blue, yellow, green, and so on. Segments that sit side by side are harmonious colors, meaning they have common pigments, segment that sit opposite each other do not have common pigments. Each segment is divided into different shades, from lightest to darkest. Any two shades from different color segments that sit side by side will have the same intensity.

The purpose of the color wheel is to help you choose and blend colors. There are different ways to blend colors to achieve different effects, from subtle colors in the living room and daring contrast in all the bedrooms. Here are four different ways to blend the colors:

1. Monotone

This means just choosing one color from any of the segment in the color wheel for the entire room or house. You can also mix two different pale shades from the same segment to give a layered effect.

2. Harmonious
This means choosing colors from adjoining segments of the color wheel. This is a very safe bet because colors of the adjoining segments will have common pigments. So you can choose colors like yellow and orange which will be very comfortable for the eyes.

3. Contrasting
This means picking colors from segments that are opposite each other. So you can pick colors like red and green to give you a very strong and bold effect. Red and green is very good for the study room and children’s room.

4. Nearly opposite
This means choosing the main color, then choosing another blending color from a segment to the right or left of the opposite color segment.

So after considering the different ways to blend the colors, the big question remains: What color should you use to paint your rooms? Different colors are going to create different effects in the house. If you don’t believe, try imaging a house interior painted pink. A few questions you may want to ask yourself before choosing the color to paint.

1. Atmosphere
If you paint the whole house pink, chances are you will feel very relaxed the whole day, and maybe even make you weak. For a relaxing atmosphere, you can try pales or neutrals. Lighter shades in the blue segment works very well. But if you want a more stimulating environment, then go for the very bright colors like bright red and lime green.

2. Existing furniture
When you have dark furniture and fittings, it is important to choose colors that will match them and blend with the theme. For example, if your furniture is mostly made up of wood and you want to achieve an overall Balinese spa or resort style atmosphere, then go for dark colors like maroon or dark brown. Contrast with dark green is also an ideal combination.

Silk Bedding

Every few months we are bombarded with divorce statistics and reports of how family life is changing. This probably sounds a bizarre topic for an interior design article, but the changing face of family life can throw up some real design challenges.

Let me outline a recent project I worked on for a family in Brighton and I’m sure it will either be relevant to you or you will know a family just like this.

My clients have two young children and live in a four-bedroom house. Both the parents also have children from a previous marriage, one of which (in their late teens) lives with the family and two of which regularly stay for weekends. Therefore, on some weekends, there are seven people in a four-bedroom house.

The challenge the family set me was to review the space available to them and to try and create a personal space for everyone. Not easy when two of the children only visit every other weekend, but critical that when they do, they feel at home and integrated into the family.

Here are some of the top tips I learned from that project which I’ve since passed onto other clients and hope they are of use to you too.

1. A tip which applies in every situation, but which is particularly important when space is really at a premium is de-clutter as much as possible. A good rule is for every new item you buy, remove an old one.

2. Rooms fulfil many purposes today, for example, lots of families who have a separate dining room, may also decide to use this room to house a communal computer and study area. Don’t allocate too many uses for any one room. In my view, a room can only have two purposes effectively, decide at the outset and stick to it.

3. If you have a wide hall way, or landing, consider placing the family computer and desk in this space. This can be a really effective use of space, particularly if your budget extends to buying some really smart shelving to keep clutter to a minimum. It also has the advantage of keeping computers out of children’s bedrooms, which is the preference of some parents.

4. Bunk beds are always a good solution if you have siblings sharing, but can also be really useful if you have step-children regularly visiting. Whilst sounding a small point, allowing children to choose their own bedding to match the overall colour design of the room can help to transform even that small area into personal space. Good quality bunk beds can be divided into separate single beds, so offering a versatility that may prove useful as children grow older and older ones leave for university.

5. Choose storage solutions carefully. If visiting step-children do not have their own room, it is really important that they have some space to store their belongings so that they do not constantly feel as though they are living out of a suitcase. On my project, I found the classic Cilek bookcase design invaluable as it is thin, but tall with a mix of cupboard and shelf based storage.

6. On my project, I could not believe the number of duvets and pillows my clients had, with summer and winter versions, storing them took up a surprising amount of space. I’m a real fan of the vacuum based storage bags that are now widely available. In my view you should only reduce duvets/pillows by 50% of their size if you want them to “bounce back”, but even this can make a real storage difference.

I hope that you find some of these tips useful. I’m always keen to hear your tips for design and can be contacted at susang@srbworld.com.
