Wooden bunk beds are a very popular type of bunk bed and have many advantages over metal bunk beds. Specifically, wooden bunk beds are often safer since there is no need to worry about metal or weld cracking.

The main disadvantages of wooden bunk beds are size and bulk. Wood is much thicker than the metal tubing used on beds and, as such, takes up a lot of space and is very heavy. As a result, moving a wooden bunk bed is an ordeal and not something you want to do very often. Likewise, shipping these beds is fairly expensive, although if you buy online and out-of-state, you will save money on sales tax.

Wooden bunk beds are often quite elegant. Many have shelves, drawers and/or desks built right into them, and can be finished in a variety of wood stains. The beds can make a bedroom more appealing to children, who can draw on them, put stickers and hang posters on them, depending upon the desires of their parents.

When selecting a bunk bed, there are many wooden options available to fit the needs of your children and your own stylistic demands. Owning such a bed can prove to be a welcome addition to your home.

The selection of beds and bed frames on the market can sometimes be overwhelming. Hopefully we will provide you with some great information to help you select the perfect bed arrangement for you and your family. The first step is to analyze the amount of space that you are dealing with. This will help you to narrow down your choices. If you have 4 children and only 3 bedrooms, a great alternative is bunk beds. Kids love them and they work well when space and number of rooms is a challenge. Loft beds, which are similar to bunk beds, also work well in smaller rooms. The bed is up off the floor 6 feet allowing for ample storage or work space underneath. Futons are great for the family room to use as seating by day and sleeping by night if you need room for company.

Let’s talk a bit more about bunk beds. If you have small children sleeping in them, we highly recommend a few things. First, the beds must conform to the current safety standards which do tend to change from time to time. Make sure you buy from a bedding retailer who has been in business for some time and is experienced. Installation can be challenging so if you can’t do it yourself, hire a professional to do it for you. This same advice goes for loft beds. Because the person is sleeping off the ground at quite a height, correct installation is a must. Futons are much less complicated. Futon frames often come assembled and the hardest part will be carrying it from the truck to your family room.

Loft beds are simply beds that are raised off the ground by six feet. The space below the bed can be used as storage, desk space or whatever you may need the room for. They come in twin, full and queen sizes and you can often find them made of maple, birch or oak. They are a great idea for spare bedrooms and adults alike feel comfortable sleeping in them as opposed to bunk beds. Because they are so high, it is recommended that the mattress be 7″ or less. If not, the person in the bed may be a bit close to the ceiling. You won’t have this problem with futons though. They sit on the ground like a normal bed. They are extremely comfortable and come in a variety of woods.

Why is it that a bunk bed is so popular with kids? Remember when you were little how exciting it was to climb onto the top bunk in your friend’s bedroom? Only to wonder why you didn’t have a similar set-up?

The first sight of a set of bunk beds to a child is the equivalent of seeing a roomful of wrapped presents on Christmas Day. It’s a place to play, and a space to call their own. Because of the popularity of bunk beds, with demand comes variety. Yes, they now have themes. Want a castle for your little kings or a dollhouse for your little princess? Of course, traditional styles and themes are still widely available.

Besides the obvious attention factor, bunk beds do serve a purpose. With space in most households at a premium, being able to put one bed on top of another is simple genius. Drawers on the bottom add functionality and a place to store kids’ valuables. How about a separate drawer for each kid? What doesn’t make a kid feel more important than a small box that he or she “owns. Talk about the ultimate in floor space conservation. Two beds stacked on top of one another, and a toy chest underneath them both. Can’t get that race track set laid out on the floor because there isn’t enough space? Now you know how.

How fun are bunk beds? Just ask a kid, even a kid who doesn’t have any. Just hang a sheet, or curtain over the bottom bunk and you have an instant fort, instant solitude, cut-off from the outside world, alone, with just your thoughts as a kid.

Since many are built with kids in mind, they are constructed to take the abuse of a kid. Bunk beds are safer now than they’ve ever been; most are designed to hold up to all the jumping, kicking, pushing and pulling that kids have to offer. Plus with all the safety precautions available for them now, parents don’t have to worry. Just make sure that your children use the ladder for climbing onto the top bunk. The temptation to leap in a single bound is an eye-widening adventure for some little ones, especially the boys.

Kids’ bunk beds are a great space-saving solution. You don’t even need to have two kids to have them either. Sometimes the extra bunk will come in handy for those occasional friend sleepovers.

Yes, the market for kids’ bunk beds is huge. But are they just for kids? Dorm rooms that house college students are primarily stacked, as well as boot camp military-style housing. But what about grown ups? Don’t most couples want to sleep in the same bed? (50% of you don’t answer this!) So why would we as grown ups want one? Well, to decorate our spare bedrooms as guest bedrooms. Home décor is a very, very big market, and most people want the inside of their houses to shine with pride.

So send the kids to bed in style, who knows maybe they’ll even want to go to bed. Combine that with the obvious allure and you have the ingredients for a parent-kid, win-win solution.

This happened to me years ago and the reason that I have written this article is so that others won’t make the same mistake I made when they decide to kick their dogs out of their people beds and put them in their own dog pet beds.

I was a young man back then and I lived in a tiny house that only had one bedroom which was also very tiny. In this tiny bedroom I had a tiny bed barely big enough to hold me let alone my 2 dogs Bozo and Sparky.

And of course my 2 dogs loved to sleep in the same bed as me but there just wasn’t enough room. So I decided that the next best thing would be for me to build them dog pet beds in the corner of my tiny bedroom. The only problem was space or a lack of space where I could build 2 separate dog beds.

I have always believed in mans ingenuity and his ability to create solutions where no solutions seem possible. So I racked my brains and came up with an ingenious solution to the space problem.

I made a blue print of my dog pet beds and early on a Saturday morning I went to the lumber yard and got all the necessary lumber to build the dog beds. When I got home I decided I wanted to make this a surprise for my dogs Bozo and Sparky so I locked myself in the tiny bedroom and started sawing and nailing the bed frames.

I was determined to finish the dog beds by bed time so my dogs would have brand new beds to sleep in that night. I worked diligently without rest and by bed time I had finally completed the dog beds.

I opened the door to my bedroom and let Sparky and Bozo in to see their new sleeping quarters. And the ingenious idea I had come up with to solve the lack of space problem was that I had built dog bunk beds. That’s right, one bed on top of the other. I had even hand crafted a small ladder that could be used to climb up to the top dog bunk bed.

My 2 dogs seemed very pleased with their new sleeping quarters. But a problem arose. Both dogs wanted to sleep in the bottom bunk bed?

It was at this point that I realized that dogs couldn’t climb ladders.

That put me right back at square one. Because only one dog could sleep in the dog beds I had built the other dog slept with me. But the dog sleeping by himself would get lonely and would join me and the other dog in my bed.

I couldn’t get a decent nights sleep. I solved this problem by moving to a bigger house with a bigger bedroom and getting a bigger bed.

And even though my solution of building bunk beds for my dogs didn’t work out I still thought it was ingenious. If only dogs could climb ladders.

Are you handy with a hammer? Skilled with a saw? Maybe you’re looking for a way to get more space into your children’s bedroom without spending a lot of money. Bunk beds are your answer. Children love them, and, today there are just so many options available to keep everybody happy.

And if you would like to take a chance and do it yourself, you’re in luck because bunk beds are somewhat simple to make. When the right materials are chosen, bunk beds can also bring a warmth and style to the bedroom that will fit in with the design scheme of the rest of the house.

And although children love their bunk beds for obvious reasons, there are additional precautions a parent must take to ensure their child’s bed is safe and secure. Every reputable bunk bed has been tested and safety certified by the ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials). This means that the bunk bed is purchased from a company that follows the ASTM’s stringent guidelines, including precise placement of the guard rails to keep little heads, feet and hands from getting caught between them. The guard rails will also be securely fastened to the bed, to keep your little ones safe for years to come. The safety aspect of guard rails cannot be stressed enough; sometimes, a child may tell his parents that he’s too big for guard rails and will ask the parent to remove them. Please never tamper with the guard rails. They are a proven, tested way to keep your child safe.

If you want to make your children’s bunk beds, please familiarize yourself with the many specifications for the beds, and for safety’s sake, don’t take any shortcuts. The main mistake people make when they make a bed from scratch, is that they then purchase the wrong-size mattress. It should fit very snug, with no greater give than three inches in any direction. Any more, and your child could be in danger of getting trapped between the mattress and frame.

Make sure you have your proportions right, in particular, make sure the child in the bottom bunk has enough head room. Make sure the lower bunk can hold your own weight without compromise. Making your own bunk beds is truly not difficult, but as they say, please read all the directions before you begin your project.

However, if you choose to purchase bunk beds that are already built, buy from a reputable online dealer who sells high-quality furniture. The dealer wants to make sure your child is safe, so they will sell a product that is well constructed and should last your child from preschool through college. The guard rails and the ladder are two places where the manufacturer should especially focus on good workmanship to ensure that the bed is safe for your child. When you get your new purchase home, please follow the directions to the letter; we cannot stress enough how important it is to follow the manufacturer’s precise directions for assembly. And if you can, allow your child to participate, even if it’s only with the unpacking, your child could possibly remember the experience for the rest of their life.

Parenting is never an easy duty. One of the most important aspects of this job includes keeping your children safe from harm. Even sleeping at night can pose both serious and non-serious threats. Every year, thousands of children experience accidents involving bunk beds. Most are minor injuries; however it is not rare to see serious injuries from accidents such as falling off the top bunk, or suffocation on guard railings (although the latter is rare).

The next part of this article will look at some of most common sources of injuries from bunk beds, and things you can do to prevent them; thus keeping your child safe at night while they sleep.

Guardrail Spacing:

One of the most common threats to child safety in regards to bunk beds is the guardrails. They are of so much concern because if not properly installed they can pose opportunities for serious injury. For example, if the guard rail is too low, there is a chance your child can fall off the top bunk during sleep (especially if he or she constantly rolls while sleeping). Also, if the spacing between the guardrails and the bunk bed are too wide, then there are chances that a child’s head can get stuck in between the two, which in some rare cases, can cause suffocation. Thankfully, all bunk beds that are manufactured now must pass a US Safety Inspection. If accepted, they will receive a certificate that says the bunk bed meets the highest of safety standards. This greatly increases guardrail safety which will reduce the number of accidents caused by bunk beds.

Upper Bunk Support:

Another common threat is the upper bunk coming down. This is usually caused when there is not enough support holding up the upper bunk’s bed frame, mattress, and of course the child. But as with the note above on guardrails, when a bunk bed passes the US Safety Inspection, you can be certain that the build quality of the bunk bed meets the highest of standards. Therefore, accidents such as these are very unlikely.

The Mattress Size:

Probably the most obvious, but heavily overlooked aspect of child safety in regards to bunk beds is the mattress size. It is important to get the right sized mattress for the bunk bed because wrong-sized mattresses can cause falls, or increase the gap between safety rails and frame.

These threats and more can be prevented however. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has given out the following tips to safely selecting, using, and maintaining your bunk beds. They suggest that you make sure:

- That your bunk bed has guard rails on all four sides.

- The gap between the bed frame and the bottom of the guard rail does not exceed 3.5 inches (89 mm).

- Guardrails extend at least 5 inches (127 mm) above the mattress surface to prevent the child from falling off.

- To include cross ties under the mattress foundation, which can be securely attached.

- That the ladder is securely attached to the bunk bed. Replace any broken ladder rungs immediately.

- Select a bunk bed that has the feature of easily and safely separating itself into two single-sized beds.

- That the mattress fits tightly against all four sides of the bed frame.

- Do not permit children under the age of 6 to use or occupy the upper bunk

- That you emphasize to the children to always use the ladder to get on the upper bunk. Never use chairs or other furniture.

- To teach children that horseplay can be dangerous.

- Consider using a nightlight so that children can see the ladder if they need to use it if they wake up during the night or when it’s dark.

- Constantly check that bunk bed is sturdy.

Other tips include:

- Replace or repair any broken parts immediately.

- If the gap between the guard rail and bed frame is larger than 3.5 inches (as per above), nail or screw in another rail to prevent a child’s head from fitting in between the gap.

- Always check to make sure that the bunk bed contains safety labels. Ask before you make your purchase.

- Add extra slats underneath the bed frames for added support.

Those are some general tips to keeping your child safe as they sleep in their bunk beds. Now your bunk bed should be a wonderland once again where your children can play, sleep, and dream without a care in the world. Your children will b e safe, and you, as a parent, can achieve peace of mind and can sleep soundly yourself. With that, you can look forward to ensuring that your children can sleep well at night and are safe when they wake up in the morning.

As a college student living in a rather small and crowded bedroom, I found myself struggling to keep a nice clean furnished bedroom. Barely big enough to fit a small desk and a bed in, I found myself avoiding studying in my tiny crowded room and I always felt claustrophobic and uncomfortable. Many people say that in order to study efficiently, one must be in tranquil and comfortable in their environment. Unfortunately, my bedroom was doing just the opposite. Now since I did not share my bedroom with anyone, I found that a loft bed was perfect for the purpose of saving space! A loft bed can save lots of space and can build a nice environment for high school and college students to study in!

Since a bunk bed usually accommodates two people, a bunk bed is really not necessary for students. Now, loft beds are actually made with the purpose of accommodating a single person in need of extra space. A loft bed will open up a gateway to possibilities that will save you a ton of space! Here are some great options for you to consider with a loft bed.

A typical college student will spend a significant amount of times sitting at his desk. While any desk is sufficient enough for them to study, it is preferred that a big desk will provide a comfortable environment to study in. Many loft beds can provide this with ease! Loft beds typically come with a nice office desk that will perfectly hold a computer with a keyboard tray as well as provide extra space for you to spread out your paperwork. Now you can sit comfortable, spread out your work, and study in a much more efficient manner.

Loft beds can also be great for non students who still need some extra space! Many adults that reside in small studio apartments are constantly looking for ways to save space. A loft bed can provide them with extra space in order for them to have the luxury of having a couch or various other furniture items. I have commonly seen people put a couch under their loft bed so they can comfortable watch TV on their couch instead of having to always use their bed as the only means of comfortably sitting.

The available options for adults when it comes to saving space is somewhat limited. While sharing a bedroom with another person is typically not an option, students and adults have to find alternative options in order to save some space. A loft bed provides just that.

Bunk beds are considered some of the best space-saving furniture construction ideas ever invented. They are excellent at freeing up space in a bedroom and children love sleeping in them. For generations, bunk beds have been the answer to depleted space in bedrooms and giving kids something fun they can enjoy having in the room of the home they share. This style of sleeping arrangement is as popular today as it ever was before, and the great thing is that bunk bed plans make it possible to construct your own custom piece of furniture. You can build as elaborately as you choose, but be sure you pick a plan that fits within your level of construction skills.

Building bunk beds based on well-written bunk bed plans is possible, even for a beginner. Most plans will begin by having you build two separate twin beds out of wood. For basic models, this means building a frame for a mattress along with a head and footboard for each one. You might incorporate box springs to support the mattress, or you might choose to simply construct a base for the mattress out of plywood. Whichever you choose, this is the basic frame and creativity quickly follows in the process.

You should certainly get your kids in on the planning and allow them to select a style and design that they will enjoy having in their room. This could include colors of paint at the end of the process, how the edges of the frame are rounded off and what kinds of materials are used during the entire building process. Obviously, building out of wood is the most conducive for do-it-yourself bunk bed plans. Make sure before you begin that you have all the tools, equipment and materials you need to complete the project. A reliable set of bunk bed plans should inform you of specific amounts you will need.

Obviously, while design is important in guaranteeing that your children will enjoy the end product, safety is number one. Your children will be sleeping on this piece of furniture. It is not like a coffee table that harms no one if a connection gives way. Your children could be seriously injured if you select poor bunk bed plans to build from. Mattress frames should be sturdy, the ladder should be attached properly and all connections should be tightly screwed into place. Taking these precautions will protect that which is most precious to you.
