Baby Shower Poems - Traditional And Modernist Approaches
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
Baby shower poems that touch the heart should be worthy works of art as much as any other forms of poetry. Believe me, I am not an English major nor could I converse intelligently about iambic pentameter or other poetic rhythms…but I know what I like personally. In the dozens of baby showers that I have attended I have heard some wonderful poems that touched everyone’s heart and left us breathless in our feelings of love and welcoming for the mother and her new baby.
According to what I have read ion the subject poetry can be grouped into two major categories: Traditional and Modernist. Cutting to the quick: the traditional approach brings forth its emotional pictures from out of of a strict discipline of form, rhythm and sound. Think ballads, sonnets, haiku.
The modernist form eschews such constraints and seeks to abandon form to fly freely in a universe of thought. Meaning extracted from free form association seems to be its goal. The modernist mouths a pure stream of consciousness to let loose what lives inside her. I don’t know, a bit abstract and dry for baby shower poems, don’t you think?
To be honest, I much prefer the traditionalist approach. To me, traditional baby shower poems are like word songs that take me outside of myself and connect me with the new person to come or arrived recently. I truly admire the talent it takes to bring me to that place within such a strong discipline. By the way, discipline can be fun too! Take this example of a “Limerick”, a poetic form reportedly invented by a man named Edward Lear and named after a town in Ireland:
There was a Young Lady whose chin,
Resembled the point of a pin;
So she had it made sharp,
And purchased a harp,
And played several tunes with her chin.
See, not too hard. That’s a form I could easily work out of myself to wrote a funny, heartfelt poem for my friend.
How about this:
There was a young mother to be,
Who had not one baby but three;
Oh husband she cried,
Regarding safety, you lied!
She was a woeful young mother to be.

Baby Shower Cake
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
The mother-to-be is looking radiant and the entire family is eagerly awaiting the pitter-patter of tiny feet—the time is right to welcome the new arrival with a baby shower bash. A baby shower is an occasion to both bless and congratulate the soon to be new mother and to extend a hearty welcome to the soon to be new member of the family. One of the most important elements in a baby shower is the baby shower cake. The mother-to-be will be delighted when you bring it out to her.
Of course, the centerpiece of a baby shower (aside from mommy) is the shower cake. These cakes are usually a white mix, two or three tiered cake decorated with lots of wonderful baby items like rattles, diaper pins, pacifiers, teddy bears and flowers. Baby shower cakes are colorful and cheery-looking. The dominating colors are pink and blue (if you know the sex of the baby, colors would be one or the other).
Alternatives to the traditional cake described above there are ice cream cakes, fruitcakes and something known as a diaper cake. A diaper cake is made with real baby diapers. They are usually newborn sized, disposable diapers that are rolled and placed in a circular fashion forming a cake. They too are decorated with baby items that can all be pulled off and used once the baby arrives.
A baby shower cake is often used as the centerpiece on a table piled with shower gifts. Once the present are opened, the cake remains to be eaten.

Baby Shower For the Second Baby
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
Having a shower for second baby used to be considered greedy and unacceptable. But now it is not only acceptable, but it is actually necessary for some families to have a baby shower for second baby. Though mom-to-be may already have a lot of the major items from her first baby. Crib, stroller, high chair - she will need many other items.
Moms-to-be always need things like diapers and wipes, undershirts, bath accessories, and feeding supplies. Second baby showers could actually be a “sprinkle” shower. A “sprinkle” shower is where guests buy only the necessities rather than having a full-blown shower.
You could also consider finding out from mom-to-be what she wished she had but didn’t get the first time around. Then add those items to the suggested gifts. It could also be a “Bear Necessities” theme decorated with all sorts of bears for the shower for second baby.
You could have baby showers for second baby for a caboose baby, or a baby born much later than other babies. Might be very similar to a first time baby shower. Most likely, if there are many years between babies, these parents no longer have any baby items and will be in need of all types of gifts for the second baby showers.
For moms-to-be who already have enough for the baby, you might consider having a “mom” baby shower where everyone brings a baby shower gift for mom-to-be instead of for the baby. These can be items with which she can pamper herself, or items that she may need while she is in labor.
Sometimes the mom-to-be doesn’t need anything for the baby or for herself, but she wants to have a get together with friends. For this type of party, you may want to ask guests to bring unwrapped baby gifts. You can all wrap these gifts at the party, label them, and then donate them to a charity in mom-to-be’s (or baby’s) name.
Baby showers for second babies can be directed towards helping out a new mom after the baby is born. If you hold the shower close enough to the baby’s birth you can have a “Freezer Party.” This is where baby shower guests bring assorted dishes that can be frozen and heated up so mom-to-be doesn’t have to worry about cooking. At least for the first week or so that she is home from the hospital.
“Helping Hands” are great for baby showers for second child. Ask guests not to buy gifts, coming instead with a homemade coupon redeemable for their services. These services can include babysitting an older child making dinner, or cleaning the house while mom and baby are still in the hospital.
You may even want to throw a baby shower to remind the mom-to-be that she won’t always be pregnant. Suggest buying gifts like sexy lingerie, sinful chocolates, and exotic beverages. All those things she has to keep away from while pregnant. Keep in mind that if you give alcoholic beverages to a nursing mother make sure she also has a breast pump and knows how to use it!
A gift certificate for a massage, dinner, or even a pre-natal class is a great idea as well. And don’t forget that mom-to-be will probably need nursing bras plus post-natal support garments as well (these might be fun as gag gifts).

Baby Shower Party Decorations to Liven Up Your Baby Shower
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
An excellent source of information providing the perfect baby shower decorations and themes. Decorations and themes that are focused and timesavers for the host. Some low cost and effective shower decoration ideas.
Decorations can be as modest or as extravagant as your budget and time allows. Literally there are a number of ways for decorating the shower. Balloons, cakes, table settings, along with wall and ceiling decorations. Decorations are an important part of any special baby shower.
Fill a basket or small wagon with stuffed animals to be used as a centerpiece. You can also place teddy bears around the room along with some dolls and toys. Place them on tables, bookcases and peeking over lamps. Or set up a train on your table. Then fill the cars with small baby items such as teething rings, pacifiers, rattles, and booties.
Although the theme as well as decorations of modern showers have changed with the times, it is still traditional to the use the colors of the baby’s nursery. You can decorate the nursery with fresh flowers, balloons and streamers.
As a general rule one should stick to the traditional ways of decorating. If you are going with the traditional party decorations, you would use china and silver. No doubt every shower needs some sort of decorations.
In baby showers it is not a necessity to use a lot of decorations. Just simple decorations would be sufficient if that is your desire, perhaps along with a few seasonal flowers and party toys.
If you do wish to celebrate the shower in a big way there are many party stores that carry large assortments of baby decorations such as storks, teddy bears and nursery rhyme characters.
These decorations can be placed anywhere and removed easily after the shower. You can give these to the expectant couple to take home after the party. Most of them can be reused for some other occasions such as a childs birthday party. One of these would be a baby diaper cake which has become very popular.
There are many more baby shower party decorations and themes. For instance, gather a bouquet of pink and blue balloons and tie them with pink and blue ribbons. You can attach them to a chair, or as the centerpiece containing baby’s breath and greens.
Similarly, purchase a small umbrella and hang it upside down over the table. Maybe over where the mother-to-be will be sitting to open the baby shower gifts. Fill the umbrella with balloons and let ribbons or streamers hang over the edges.
Softly play light music or children’s songs. You can also do mild lighting with small bulbs as used in Christmas tree decorations. If you know what names the parents have chosen, spell them out using wooden blocks or paper strips.
Summary of Decorating Ideas
Nursery Colors:
Use colors from the nursery for your theme. This option gives the flexibility to use any type of napkins, tableware, and party decorations for your party. You don’t necessarily need to buy expensive party decorations with patterns, just use the same colors throughout.
Nursery Theme:
Similar to the nursery colors, but this one uses the actual theme of the nursery. Ask the mom-to-be what she plans for her nursery decor and go from there. If her decor is lace and cream, then keep to that same look and feel for the shower, using party decorations with that color and pattern.
Another important part is where you are actually organizing the baby shower. The location will help you determine the matching party decorations and themes. Whether your baby shower is in an elegant restaurant, a banquet hall or a warm cozy home. The right supplies and party decorations will add that extra finishing touch.
Pick a theme and carry it through with coordinating supplies and party decorations such as centerpieces, balloons, gifts and party favors. From invitations and games to cups, plates and napkins. These party supplies offer everything you’ll need for the perfect baby shower.
A little bit of creativity and imagination will play a big role here. Good baby shower party decorations need not be very costly, but does require some effort and creativity. While choosing a baby shower theme or baby shower games remember to make them a good fit for all the baby shower guests invited. You also might want to offer the party winners little treats like candies and eclairs.

A Daddy Baby Shower - New Twist on the Old Baby Shower
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
Try something new, a Daddy Baby Shower. Even though no one would realistically expect a new daddy-to-be to sit around with his closest buddies, opening baby shower gifts and playing party games while oohing and aahing over the imminent birth of his child. That doesn’t mean that Dad can’t have a baby shower-type celebration. Daddy deserves to celebrate the birth of his child, too!
Of course, the term baby shower does invoke visions of baby themed parties. Like the one described above when planning a baby shower. So perhaps “baby shower” is not an appropriate name for this get-together. Why limit yourself with a label, anyway? Call it a “celebrating-Jim’s-impending-fatherhood” party, if you want, instead of baby showers for dad.
Here are a few suggestions to make this type of party one for daddy-to-be to remember:
Play Games:
Well, not baby shower games. But you can play poker, horseshoes or even a game of shirts-n-skins football in the back yard.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry:
Have tons of fattening and not-good-for-you foods. Make spareribs, cheese steaks, wings, and anything else you can eat with your hands and make a mess with. The wives won’t be there to complain and you can grunt all you want. Have some beers (or soda if you prefer) and barbecue.
Last Night Out:
Take the dad-to-be out for a night on the town to rival his bachelor party. Do some bar hopping, play some pool, shoot some darts, and don’t go home until you are kicked out of at least three places. Keep Dad safe, though, and designate someone to stay sober and make sure everyone gets home in one piece. You might also want to check with mom-to-be to make sure she is okay with this plan. She is, after all, pregnant and might not be all that amenable to the last-night-out-before-fatherhood party.
Gifts for Dad-To-Be:
Let the official baby shower take care of the baby necessities. Give Dad gifts for himself, or gifts that he would have chosen for the baby. Buy him a diaper tool kit, complete with goggles, rubber gloves, tongs, clothespin, and of course, diapering essentials, or a Daddy Gear Diaper Bag.
Gag gifts are fun, too. Or you could buy clothing for the new baby with Dad’s favorite sports team’s logo or matching Dad and Baby t-shirts. Think about necessities like batteries, too. Most likely they won’t be on Mom’s registry, but all parents know that batteries are a hot commodity in any house with children. Be creative.
And don’t forget that Dad might need some reading material to get himself up to date on the latest parenting trends. Consider getting him a book on fatherhood, funny or otherwise, or maybe a magazine subscription for daddy, such as American Baby Magazine.
Ask other new dads to think about what toys or objects were particularly helpful when their little ones were inconsolable, and either buy or recommend them for the times when dad-to-be is home alone with Junior.
Comfort Dad:
New Dads are usually pretty stressed out about what there life is going to be like after the new baby comes. Be prepared to have guests tell funny and helpful stories about their own experiences with becoming a daddy. Make it a point to reassure him that his wife is not really crazy, she is just hormonal and this, too, shall pass.
Remember, daddy baby showers don’t have to be like the traditional shower, or even called a shower, but you can have one for dad just the same.

Baby Shower Cakes
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
Baby showers are an exciting way to welcome a baby into the world and are great occasions for the parents-to-be to receive the blessings of all their well wishers. Generally given by friends and co-workers, baby showers are much more than just parties. They provide a chance for the guests to get together and maybe even meet the new baby if the baby is already born.
Baby shower cakes are also known as diaper cakes or just baby cakes. Unlike regular cakes, these are made of several baby items like diapers, bibs, pacifiers, bottles, shoes, socks, and toys that new parents will need for the baby. Baby shower cakes look just like conventional cakes but they are far from edible!
Baby shower cakes are decorated to suit the theme of the party. The size of the cake can also differ according to the kinds of gifts it contains. They can be one, two, three, or even four-tiered. They can be placed as a center piece at the party and later taken home by the mom-to-be as a gift.
Baby shower cakes can be based on several themes like, teddy bears, duckies, baby booties, baby bottles, storks, nursery rhymes, or fairy tales to make them look cute and adorable. The rest of the gifts can be based on the theme of the baby shower cake.
There are special stores that make and sell baby shower cakes. There are also several websites on the internet that offer advice for decorating baby shower cakes. These sites also make and sell baby cakes as per the personalized requirements of the customers. Another way to get ideas for baby shower cakes is to attend a few baby showers or to ask a few people who have had a baby shower or arranged one. Ideas are sure to shower.

The baby shower games played at a baby shower are usually one of the most memorable experiences during the pre-baby events. However, to ensure the games are successful there should be some thoughtful party planning. Before starting the games, it’s a good idea to go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves and their relationship to the Mommy-to-Be.
Here are some of the more popular games you can play during the party:
Guess Mommy-to-Be’s Tummy Size: You will need some string / yarn and scissors for this game. Have each participant pull the yarn to the size they believe would fit perfectly around the Mommy-to-Be’s center of her pregnant tummy. After everyone cuts their string, compare the results to the Mommy-to-Be’s actual tummy. Give a prize to the guest who is the closest! This game is an ole favorite and will be enjoyed by all.
Say “Baby”: You will need baby safety pins or another type of baby object you can place on a string for each guests at the shower as well as string or yarn, enough for each woman to wear as a necklace. Have each guest place the necklace with the baby safety pins around her neck when she gets to the party. The rules for this game are given at the beginning of the baby shower. Whenever someone says the word “baby” during the shower, any woman who calls it out gets a pin from the other woman who stated the word. At the end of the shower, the woman with the most pins wins a prize.
Naming Baby Items: You will need a pad of paper and pen for each guest. Have each guest write down as many baby products as they can name, such as bottle, blanket, pacifier, etc during a five minute period. This sounds easy, and IS at first, but during last few minutes, the participants will start racking their brains for more baby items. The guest with the most baby products named will win and receive a prize.
Make The Mommy-to-Be’s Baby: You will need baby magazines, scissors, glue and paper. Divide the guests into teams with each team having three members, and give each team some baby magazines. Ask each team to cut out pieces of different baby qualities and put together a picture of what they think the Mommy-to-Be’s baby will look like. Ask the Mommy-to-Be pick the baby she likes the best. Prizes will go to the winning team. This is another of the most popular games.
Guess The Gerber’s: You will need Gerber’s infant food, pads of paper and pens. You will need to take the labels off of the baby food jars and have the guests at the baby shower guess the food, i.e. carrots, peas, sweet potato. This game usually has ten different jars or more of different baby food. The winner is the guest with the most correct guesses.
Guess the Number of Safety Pins: You will need a lot of safety pins and a jar. Pass a jar full of baby safety pins around so all the guests can view it. Each guess will then guess the number of safety pins they think are in the jar. The one who guesses the closest wins a baby shower prize. This another game favorite.
Place The Baby On The Mommy-to-Be: You will need cutouts of a baby, tape and blindfolds. This is a version of Pin The Tail on the Donkey, a game kids love to play. Blindfold each guests and give them a paper baby to place the baby as close to the Mommy-to-Be’s tummy as possible. The one who gets closest to placing the paper baby on the pregnant tummy wins.
Bottle Races: You will need several baby bottles with milk. Have each guest take a bottle filled with a milk (you may substitute milk for another liquid) and suck the bottle as a baby would. The woman who drinks the most during an allotted time wins the baby shower gift. This is always a laughter filled game.
Baby Bingo: You will need pens and bingo cards. Before opening the gifts, number each gift on the box starting with one. If you know that 35 people will be attending the shower, pre-print bingo cards with numbers 1 through 35 and randomly place them on 35 cards. When the Mommy-to-Be’s decides to open the presents, she grabs the present she wants to open and reads the number out loud. As soon as someone receives bingo, they win the game and the prize.
What’s the baby item: You will need various baby products and a blindfold. A bag of baby items are placed in front of the Mommy-to-Be for her to take one item out at a time blindfolded and tell the baby shower guests what item she has in her hands. This is really fun baby shower game when you choose some crazy baby toys or products.
Complete the Baby Rhyme: You will need a book containing baby rhymes. The host will read out loud to all the guest a part of the rhyme, which is to be completed by the other women.
How’s the Baby: Ask all guests to bring a baby picture of themselves before the shower. Have all the pictures in a collage and draw lines for people to fill in who they think the babies are out of the people at the shower. If most guests don’t know each other, just have the pictures of the mother, mother-in-law, sisters, and Mommy-to-Be. See how many people guess right. You can make copies of the baby picture collage to see how many can guess right.
Baby Scrambler: Another fun game is to choose 25 baby related items and scramble the spelling. For instance, pacifier can be changed to reiifpca. Ask the guests to unscramble the words. The one who gets the most right in five minutes receives a prize.
Name that Baby Song: You will need a pad of paper and pen for each guest. Have each guest write down all the songs that have baby in their titles, like baby love, Santa baby, one for my baby and so on. Allow five minutes for this game. This baby shower game can be made more difficult by asking who also wrote the songs.
Dirty Diaper Circle: You will need a diaper, chocolate and music player. Although one of our “dirtiest” games, it is one of the favorites. The host takes a diaper that has been “fixed” with warm chocolate in the right place and have the guests pass it to the person next to them is in a circle. When the host stops the music, whoever is holding the diaper is out of the game.
Pacifier in the baby’s mouth: You will need a blindfold, a baby picture and a pacifier drawing for each guest. Tape a picture or drawing of a baby on the wall and have the blindfolded women try to tape the pacifier as close to the mouth of the baby as possible. The one who gets the closest ones.
Blindfold Diapering: You will need a blindfold, baby doll (life size) and diapers. One of the funniest games. It calls for the guests to be divided into teams of up to five people. Each team has a doll, blindfold and diapers. The object is for each participant to place the blindfold on, take the current diaper off the doll and place the new one on while blindfolded. After the first person completes diapering, they run to the next teammate who places the blindfold on and has to do the same. The first team to finish diapering wins!
Baby Tic-Tac-Toe: You will need a large erasable board to use for the tic-tac-toe board, writing utensil, and baby facts. Baby shower guests are divided into teams and are ask to answer a question about a baby fact. If they get the answer right, they get to choose a space, like the classic tic-tac-toe game.
The baby shower games are a very important part of your baby shower. You want to do everything you can to ensure the baby shower games are enjoyed by all and are a huge success. Here’s some tips for ensuring your baby shower games are successful:
a. Be sure you have writing utensils for everyone
b. Wrap games prizes
c. Make sure to have extra prizes in case of tie games

Presents. Presents. Who doesn’t like presents? Further, for a mommy-to-be, her own baby shower is like being made princess for a day!
New moms, especially first time moms, want everything to be just right. Everything about baby should be well coordinated and matching. Wait until you have two or three kids and then see how you feel. Just kidding … mostly.
One fun part of having is baby is registering for gifts. Some stores will give mom a laser ‘gun’ and tell her to scan anything and everything she wants. How fun is that? “I want one of these and one of these and oh I should have one of these…”
Also about the time she is deciding which baby wipe warmer she would like to have, she passes the stationery department. Oooooooh, look at the adorable wrapping paper and little bows and how cute are these little shower invitations.
“Oh my goodness… I haven’t even considered shower invitations!” laments mom. Relax; generally the shower hostess will take care of those little details. That is, unless mom wants to be in on all the details.
Shower invitations are nothing more than information to tell the when and where details of the baby shower. If all the guests have online access, it’s not unheard of to use evites - electronic invitations; it saves on postage. But some people think that is tacky. It’s a personal preference.
All the guests who are invited will already know that there is an impending birth; so that won’t be news. They really just need to know what time and where to show up with a gift. Make sure to include a map or directions to the location - not everyone will be familiar with the party place.
It’s also a good idea to include the name(s) of the stores where the mommy-to-be is registered. If mom has selected a particular theme (Pooh, fish, fire trucks, etc.) you may want to include that info in the invitation. You may choose to use invitations with the theme on it - assuming there is a theme.
Lastly if there is something special you would like guests to bring, be sure to include that in the invitation. Some hostesses ask that guests bring baby pictures of the guest of honor, or favorite memories or some even request that everyone bring a package of diapers or a container of wipes.
Basically the invitation needs to state when, where, what to bring and where to RSVP. It’s that simple!

Baby Shower Invitations Ideas
Filed Under Home And Family | Leave a Comment
The first thing you need to do before you order invitations or make your own baby shower invitations is to decide on the theme of your party! You can choose from baby shower invitations ideas like teddy bears, ducks, baby bottles and diaper pins. And what colors do you want? Blue for boys, pink for girls, or yellow and green for the baby yet unseen?
You need to consider the mother’s personal style. Would she prefer bright and bold or subdued and sweet? If you’re not sure, don’t hesitate to get some input from those who know her best. Most of all what kind of baby shower invitations ideas would she like best? That’s the thing that will be saved in the baby scrapbook for the rest of the child’s life. After all, as much fun as it is for you to plan the baby shower, it is the mother and child who will cherish the special, once in a lifetime memory forever. So, plan well!
Once you have decided the theme for your baby shower party. Designing the baby shower invitation is the first step in letting all the family, friends and co-workers know. So you want to make a great first impression. Using the baby shower invitations ideas will help make everything run smoothly, and that’s the impression you want to give.
Now let’s get on with it, because those baby shower invitations need to be sent out weeks in advance to allow everyone time to shop for the perfect baby gifts and make travel plans if necessary. And you’ve got to figure in printing and delivery time as well. There is no time to waste.
You’ve finally chosen your theme, colors and you’re confident you know the mother’s style. What important details should be included? First and foremost is the date and time of the event and the location. You may consider including a map to the location if necessary for out of town guests. Include the RSVP information and the places where mother and baby are registered.
If the event is open to the guys, you need to say so. Otherwise, they will assume that this is a ladies only event. But having the guys around can be great fun! Don’t rule it out as a possibility.
Once you think you’ve got the details of the baby shower invitation down pat, it’s time to decide whether you should create them yourself or look for a printer. Creating baby invitations yourself is always an option, but you may decide it’s worth paying an expert for their services.
They can help you make decisions about baby shower invitations ideas you may be less familiar with. Like font colors, paper styles, baby shower invitation wording, and matching accessories like envelopes, thank you notes, and baby birth announcements.
If you decide to use a professional printing service, make sure you know what you’re paying for up front. Let them know your budget, but be aware that they will try to add on services. Know before you go into the sale exactly what you will and will not pay for.
Do you really want to pay for embossing or engraving or custom design? Do you want the heavier paper with accent ribbon that will cost more postage to mail as well as take longer to print and deliver? There are lots of choices for you and a little time spent in researching your options and asking good questions will go a long way and possibly save you money.
Whatever you decide, make the mother to be a special keepsake with these wonderful baby shower invitations ideas. Perhaps frame an invitation and display it at the baby shower, and then let her take it home as a gift. Or find a picture of the expectant mother. Then tuck it along with the baby invitation into a new baby scrapbook.
This will help get her started in saving all of her precious memories. She will be touched by your thoughtfulness. This is a special time in the mother’s life, and you will be appreciated for all that you do to welcome the newborn into the world.
