Giving birth to a healthy and normal baby is something to be grateful about. One in every one hundred cases can be a child with Down’s syndrome. Simply known as DS, this is a condition that is characterized by mental retardation and slow growth and is caused by misappropriation of genes. This is enough to tell you that toilet training for a child with such a condition can be quite frustrating, not to mention that it would call on a lot of patience, comfort and strength on the part of the the mother.
Toilet training for a child with down’s syndrome can start at six months of age. You may begin by taking the child to a comfortable enclosed place like the bathroom, then make a hissing sound to depict the act of peeing. To boost his confidence even some more, you could have the tap water running to encourage him to pee. The sound of the running water will do the trick for you and your child.
Before you begin the exercise, it is worth to first note how often the child does their toilet. Keep checking their diapers and note at what intervals soiling of the same takes place. Once you get started, the best interval to toilet train your child should be between every one hour. Once they get used to this movement every one hour, you will find that things will get even simpler for you because the child will inform you when they want to pee.
No matter how frustrating a child with Down’s syndrome may be, do not frustrate them in return by shouting at them or walking away form them. Be with them all through until they are finished and even use motivational words towards them. Never force them to do their potty, but with love and care, be there for them.
