lol I started speaking (well not like sentences but just words) earlier than other kids. Wonderful! I'm struck by your title, "In My Language." It seems that the language metaphor gets in the way here. Could I make a suggestion? People for whom language comes easily control their psychological lives by using stories (paradigmatically, plot and character). They live autobiographically. Perhaps others have alternative ways of controlling their psychological lives. Perhaps some use music (paradigmatically, rhythm and melody). If so, then perhaps they live autobio-musically?

Thank you for this video. I teach a class of sensory autistic teens and always strive to understand their language and needs and hope that I have never considered my students to be any less of a person than anyone else. But I'm a bit worried about the idea of deficits that has been talked about in these comments. I think that if there are differences, one cannot consider *either* side to have a deficit. We can only hope to build understanding from *both* sides. I hope to do my part in that.

In my view medical experts cannot help us :\ The only way I know how to conquer my Asperger's is through small "doses" of socialisation :D and to further this you need the help of other people :) I know because it's what I do and how I over-come mine :) it does help if you know who, how and when to socialise :) make friends online and ask them where they live and try meeting up in small groups :) then try meeting in larger groups :D or find some social group and expand friendships there :D

If you wish to debate this subject I would appreciate it if you would refrain from comparisons with insanity. As a person with aspergers I find many of the comments to be extremely offensive. Yes I am different, but I am still human and certainly would not want to be prenatally aborted. On the subject of the video itself, I feel that it goes a little too far. I believe that a person with an autistic spectrum disorder should get help, but only as much as they personally want.

I saw your postings, and what I can say is that this is a very interesting discussion. Is authism an alternative way of life or a disability? My answer would be that it depends if autistic traits are so strong that relationship with society gets heavily impaired and it causes you problems. And I believe authistic people may see a few things out of the box, because they are different. Just as schizophrenics can.

What a great recovery video, it gives parents like me hope that my son will recover, we're in the beginning of our biomedical journey and we hope that David has as good of an outcome as Ethan did. One question that I had was did Ethan always have speech or did that come later with the treatments? I'm asking because David has no speech and I'm waiting so desperately for him to say any word. Wow! I read Jenny McCarthy's book Mother Warriors and this is Stan the Man. Anyone with Autistic children should read that book he goes into more detail of his story. The struggles with his son Ethan and things you can to to heal your kids. Very touching book! Love this video it gives hope :0)

There is also the opposite idea that people diagnosed with Asperger's have no difficulties with verbal speech. Which is a load of BS. I was officially diagnosed with Asperger's, but I have some difficulties with verbal speech. Most of the time my speech works fine, but sometimes it doesn't. Also, the ability to produce ineligible sentences does not mean you can effectively communicate what you want to communicate. It's called the autism spectrum for a reason. Things aren't black and white.

Thanks for posting. You son's story gives me hope for my son Connor. He turns 4 this May and is low functioning, non-verbal ASD. Tried the GF/CF diet for 6 months w/o improvement. We're now on a waiting list to see a DAN doctor. Hope to share your success and joy.

i think the best thing is to explain to the stranger that your friend is autistic and attempt to get your friends attention on something other then the stranger its no good trying to physically remove his hands from the stranger though, it only agitates him, most likely making him hold on longer, as his mind will be too filled with all the input (the stranger, yourself/other friends/the enviroment, etc.)

Carly is amazingly eloquent. Have also seen a success story. Used to drive an escorted little boy about eight years old to a special school and he seemed to be an autistic no-hoper. A real handful like Carly. Fast forward some eight years. Hadn't seen him in the intervening time. Recently had an assignment to go to another school with an escort to pick up passengers. They're no less "normal" than anyone. They see the world though vastly different perspectives than we do, and really, I imagine that they achieve more of a sense of what is really there even though nothing exists outside of us. Just as they have struggles with control over their mind and body, so does everyone. Is covering your ears, and hitting things because your mind is unable to act upon what you do want, any different from someone who eats a lot and can't stop even though they want to?
