There was a theory- "refrigerator mom" theory, that was very widely accepted for years. Children were taken from their "frigid" moms to be "cured" in residential facilities. i think these kids are very smart, even smarter than other kids when it comes to something they enjoy. they just get fixated one one subject. i knew a kid that had autism and was very ahead of his class mates in math, but a little slower in other subjects.

cognitive behavioural therapy does not "cure" autism, it just teaches them how to behave more neurotypically. It still isn't a natural response for them to make eye contact etc. NT's do it without thinking, but even with training, it does not become automatic with someone who is autistic. As someone with autism prominent (and asperger's IS considered to most high functioning autism) in her family, only about half of people with autism are mentally handicapped (varying in severity), but still manage to be autonomous. Also, although I have my own way of relating to the world, I am often (not always) perfectly capable of doing what I said in the video and switching into other people's language if I have to.

Wonderful! I'm struck by your title, "In My Language." It seems that the language metaphor gets in the way here. Could I make a suggestion? People for whom language comes easily control their psychological lives by using stories (paradigmatically, plot and character). They live autobiographically. Perhaps others have alternative ways of controlling their psychological lives. Perhaps some use music (paradigmatically, rhythm and melody). If so, then perhaps they live autobio-musically?

I do not see you as sub-human or anything of that nature, but I am uncertain that I see your language as a meaningful form of primary communication as it is non-standard even among those who are autistic. Thank you for this video. I teach a class of sensory autistic teens and always strive to understand their language and needs and hope that I have never considered my students to be any less of a person than anyone else. But I'm a bit worried about the idea of deficits that has been talked about in these comments. I think that if there are differences, one cannot consider *either* side to have a deficit. We can only hope to build understanding from *both* sides. I hope to do my part in that.

Even if the kids didn't play defense on him, it is just as much about those kids having an open mind to accept children with a disability rather than insulting them and not allowing him to play. He felt great that night just as they did many nights for playing well when he was never capable of doing that because of his disability. I assure you that those players that helped him obtain that feeling that night probably felt better that night helping him feel that way than they ever did scoring.

My son is receiving neurofeedback for 4 years and he has improves 75% in showing affection, communication and behavior, to him is fun because he plays a spaceship game, he will move the ships with his mind. If you wish to debate this subject I would appreciate it if you would refrain from comparisons with insanity. As a person with aspergers I find many of the comments to be extremely offensive. Yes I am different, but I am still human and certainly would not want to be prenatally aborted. On the subject of the video itself, I feel that it goes a little too far. i think the best thing is to explain to the stranger that your friend is autistic and attempt to get your friends attention on something other then the stranger its no good trying to physically remove his hands from the stranger though, it only agitates him, most likely making him hold on longer, as his mind will be too filled with all the input (the stranger, yourself/other friends/the enviroment, etc.)

Many autistic people, including the man who wrote the text, don't see saying "autistic person" as any worse than saying "Catholic person". Nobody assumes that calling someone a Catholic person or even a Catholic is, in that context, "putting the religion before the person," so it's the same with autism for some people. In this context it's better to call people what they prefer to be called, and that varies from person to person.

I may only have a small tiny hint of autism, if any, but my brother ended up getting it in the worst way. He didn't really start walking until he was 2, and that's pretty much as far as he developed. It took to age 10 just to get him to stop destroying everything in sight or putting everything in his mouth. He hasn't said a word yet, and wears diapers. I don't like the description, wheres the feelings in a stone? Where is all the screaming and the frustration I hear? Autism is not all about structures or different characters, many autistic children are deficient in nutrients due to severe probs with wheat/milk. I accept my child and love him, yet I want him to be well. I have found chagning his diet helped alot. Where is the reality, autism is autism, everyone is a stone.
