Not sure what children should do. Stay in bedroom? Climb out window? Run and find parents? Just get out? Etc.

Any information out there on proper procedures?

You can do a dry run with your children, show them what they need to do even if it means climbing out the window. You can also check with your local fire company to give you information on doing home fire drills.

They need to learn how to crawl under the smoke, check the door to see if it is hot, and then get out of the house. They need to know 2 ways out of the house. Their window if they door is hot, and an easier way, like the front door, that they can use if their door is not hot. You should have a designated meeting place as safe distance away from the house so your children know where to meet you. Tell them not to go back into the house for anything and not to take the time to take things out of the house. A fire can move very fast so getting out needs to be their main priority.

When I was married with step kids each time we moved I would gather us and we would make our fire escape plans.
We acted out scenarios from all the rooms in the house. That porch roof was not so far from the ground as they thought and other such considerations. the door to the cellar let to the bulkhead etc. We brainstormed it so we all were involved. We knew about where to get towels to wet to filter the smoke or turning the shower on ourselves if needed . WE knew to cling to the floor for clearer air. WE knew not to hide in a closet or such and how to land from a jump. Sometimes screwing a strong eye bolt into a base floor sill 2×4 can be a connection for an escape rope with a strong snap clip on the end of it , found at feed/farm stores.
We did drills from time to time but always within 2 weeks of moving into a new house or apartment. Acting it out helps if the need arises for real. I have always taught children around me to in a crisis to get real calm real quick, think and act. It makes everyone feel more secure and competant.
